Netflix’s heart-wrenching mini series Maid (2021) provides insight into serious topics like domestic violence, mental health, and poverty; with the main character Alex leaving her abusive boyfriend and taking their daughter with her in an attempt to provide her with a safer, better life. In doing so, she leaves the financial stability that he provided and so we see her struggle with the social care system and attempt to balance her job whilst caring for her daughter. As she struggles to make ends meet in her isolation. The show is based on the memoir of Stephanie Land called Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay and a Mother’s Will to Survive (2019) and is ultimately a realistic, gripping portrayal of how a mother will do everything she can to provide a good life for her daughter.
