Is it £4 to publish an article?

£4 is the membership cost for an entire year. Once you have that, you may write as many articles as you want, both for the print edition and the blog. Without a membership you are able to write 1 article for free!

Can I write about any film or TV show, even if it is in a different language?

Yes, you can write about any film or television show that you want. It doesn’t matter what language the original film/ show is in, how old it is or even if it is strictly a show or film. Documentaries, music videos and animations are equally as welcome. For more information on this, please refer to our ‘Writer’s Guidelines’ section of our website. However, if you have any questions regarding an article idea, please get in touch.

Can I conduct interviews?

Yes! Interviews are not only welcome but also encouraged and highly valued.

Can I write for Spotlight anytime? Are there timeframes?

You can write and submit articles for our online Spotlight Blog anytime. However, for our Print Edition, there are set deadlines to ensure timely publication.

Where can I purchase the print editions?

You can buy our printed magazines directly on our YORKSU website https://yorksu.org/activities/view/spotlight-magazine under the “products” section. Our main collection points are the launch parties, so be sure come along to enjoy the evening and pick up your copy. However, we also have occasional magazine collection points on campus for people that cannot make the launch parties. Keep an eye on our instagram (@spotlightuoy) for any updates on this.

Do you have a writers’ group-chat?

Yes, we have a group-chat for all of our writers so everyone can communicate, get to know each other. If you would like to join you do have to be a member and if you already have a membership, it will be continually linked in our Newsletter. But you can always email us for access.

Where can I keep up with the latest news and releases?

You can keep up with the latest news and releases on our Instagram (@spotlightuoy), where we regularly post updates. Members will also occasionally receive a newsletter with additional information.

Vacant committee positions are listed on the ‘Meet the Team’ page of our website and advertised on our Instagram page. For more information about a specific position, feel free to email us.

Do I have to be at The University of York to be a writer for Spotlight Magazine?

No, you don’t have to be a student at The University of York to write for Spotlight Magazine. Non-students can apply for an associate membership (free of charge) through the YORKSU website. Detailed instructions and guidance are available on their site. Once approved and given an associate member account, you’ll be able to purchase a membership for Spotlight Magazine.
